3D Terrain

Turn a GPX route into a 3D map

Export the GPX from Strava, Komoot, Garmin Connect or Wikiloc, drop it in, and the route settles onto the actual mountains it crossed. Then take the picture, the video or the print home.

From activity file to 3D scene

Import GPS track takes GPX tracks and routes as well as KML tracks. The line is resampled to a clean arc and draped over the digital elevation model, so it climbs the ridges and drops into the valleys the way the ride or the hike actually did.

Style the ground under it: satellite imagery, any of 16 colour ramps, rivers and lakes at their true widths, real-height buildings at city scale. Add a title, annotate the start, the summit and the finish. A second option — Add GPX as annotation — pins a simplified route line onto the map face for 2D exports.

Ways to show it off

GPX to 3D print and GPX to 3D model

Import a GPX or KML file and the route is draped onto the real elevation surface, so it follows every ridge and descent. From there you can print the terrain with the route raised on it (STL/OBJ/GLB), render the view as a PNG, record an orbit (MP4) or export the terrain as a heightmap. The route stays aligned on the ground in every output.

Routes from Strava, Garmin Connect, Komoot and Wikiloc all import as plain GPX. For a print, choose a box that keeps the route in frame and set relief so the route stays visible.

How it works

  1. Choose a region that contains the route — a named country, state or county in Europe or the Americas, a box drawn anywhere on Earth, or an imported GeoJSON area.
  2. Press Import GPS track in the Region panel and pick the .gpx or .kml file.
  3. Export from the Export menu, or press Share Link.

Questions

Which file formats can I import?
GPX tracks and routes, and KML tracks — including files exported from Strava, Komoot, Garmin Connect and Wikiloc.
Does it use the elevation my watch recorded?
The route line is draped onto the elevation grid the terrain model is built from, so it sits on the rendered ground and stays aligned in the view and in the PNG and video exports.
Can I print the terrain under my route?
Yes. The route becomes a raised line on the terrain in the STL/OBJ/GLB exports (about 2.4 mm wide at the chosen print scale), so the print carries the route with it. The 3D printing guide covers sizes and slicer setup.
Can I share the scene?
Share Link creates a short URL that restores the region, palette, camera, route and every annotation exactly as you left it — a permanent snapshot with no expiry.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The layout is responsive and the panel collapses into a drawer; drag rotates the model and pinch zooms.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no account, no trial and no paid tier — imports, exports and share links included.
Can I 3D print a GPX route?
Yes. Import the GPX, frame the route, then export STL — the route is draped as a raised line on the terrain in the mesh.
How do I convert GPX to STL?
Open 3D Terrain, use Import GPS track, pick the GPX file to frame the route, then Export STL in the Export panel for the terrain under it. The route line itself appears in PNG/video, not in the STL mesh. No GIS software needed.
Does it work with Strava and Komoot?
Yes — export the activity as GPX from Strava, Komoot, Garmin Connect or Wikiloc and import the file here.
Can I make a 3D map of a hiking trail without a GPX?
Yes — draw a line or area annotation on the map, or use the profile tool to read a route between two points.
